I’m Theresa, wife, mother of two, Full Spectrum Doula and Nona Birth Doula certified. I became a doula after the experience of my first birth. I felt like I was prepared going into it using only the resources the hospital suggested to me. I then learned through experience it wasn’t quite enough actually. I didn’t have continuous support from staff I knew, I felt rushed, and interventions were not fully discussed, just glossed over. I felt soon after that things could have gone differently if I would have had someone there that knew my goals and the process of physiological birth, that allowed for my husband and I to feel safe with a constant presence, and not a rotating door into the room. After much research a learned about birth doulas and that it was their exact job to do all the things I felt like I was missing during my first birth. I felt so inspired by my first birth that things could be better with the right support and knowledge that I became a birth doula before having my second child. I wanted to become a birth doula to support women in a way that I felt was so greatly missing in our society.

I went on to have my second child and it was a redemption and total transformation. My husband and I had hired a birth doula and the support for him and me allowed us to stay focused on the goal I had set for myself, an unmedicated physiological birth. After that I knew in my soul the importance of having full autonomy and constant support can absolutely change the way a birth is conquered and processed and that a birth doula was an excellent way to insure that possibility.

I want to help families feel supported, empowered, and that even if plans change you have full knowledge of what is happening. Birth is beautiful and transformative, it is surrendering into the unknown and belief in what your body was made to do, and realizing that the path is not always the same for everyone, but everyone needs support either from within or from someone else.
